kiwifails used to be a Kiwi Farmer. He's pretty shy about their KF history, but he overshared to the point where I was able to figure it out.
Well, whoever he is he stinks of desperation. People like this who try to become personalities in this sphere burn fast.
I only ever post pics in webps now because it frustrates people who don't understand image formats.
I have a webp to png extension the issue is its not readable

Why would you want to waste up to 4X more space for the same quality image on your drive with an obsolete image format?

Is that more readable now? https://archive.is/NKsQ7

Maybe webp files don't open in his preferred image viewer? The advantage of a format that's been well-supported for 20 years like PNG, or 25+ years like JPEG, or 30+ years like GIF, is that it simply works everywhere. Whereas webp only works if your software is new enough and the developers have bothered to support it. For most people the most readily available webp-supporting software is their web browser so it makes sense that webp is gaining popularity on the Internet.

The only programs I have on my system that can read webp images are my web browser and the webp conversion utilities cwebp and dwebp. The file picker doesn't even know what to do with them, so I can't get a preview of a file while I'm selecting it.

It's an extra step in my workflow, which is optimized for PNG. All of my tooling supports PNG, JPEG, and GIF but the only way I can create a webp is by converting from one of those other formats. If I want to crop or edit a webp, I need to convert it to PNG first.

Now, webp itself is pretty flexible, supporting both lossless and lossy compression algorithms. The size reduction in lossy mode is pretty decent and the image quality is better than JPEG, and adequate for the purposes of posting screenshots. As the Jew who pays the bill, I can't ignore that.

Turbofag gets modded again on Onion Farms and plays victim. (First time he got modded recently was for posting some zalgo text in like the Joshua Moon thread or another one, I don't remember exactly.)

CrimsonSpammer.webp

Crimson notes how she doesn't ever get modded for her own many, many spam posts. Even for her shock porn spam and possibly illegal gore spam that she has used to harass other users. Which would normally result in a ban from many websites.

(And no, I don't think Crimson's dox was a "fail". Because it bothers her way too much.)

Refusing to ever take an L, Turbofag tries to blame someone who 1.) hasn't been online since Oct 4, 2024 2.) has "Local Moderator" privileges which don't allow him to actually do any jannying. When it was probably Ken himself who modded Turbofag.

So tired of these 2 schmucks fellating each other in every thread. As mentioned earlier, both are extremely Cluster B

Sometimes webp is bigger than PNG:

Usually not if they're both lossless. Also, I think you can compress .pngs somehow, but tbh I've never tried that.

Well, now that I think about it. I think the way that .pngs work is that the "compressed" ones are also lossless. Just you can choose if you want the crap encoding algorithm for .pngs that are bigger, or you can choose to use the good encoding to "compress" them. Which you should always choose anyway.

But enough about this for now....

PNG format files are always losslessly compressed. There are a couple options exposed by some encoders, but I don't think they impact compression ratio all that much. PNG at the time it was conceived was a great compromise format between JPEG, which was visibly lossy even at higher quality settings, and the Microsoft bitmap image format emitted by MSPaint, which was completely uncompressed and who's on-disk format contained a ton of null bytes for the purposes of padding. PNG is a lot less complex compared to TIFF, a format rarely used by mere mortals outside of Windows Fax and Scan, and has smaller file sizes compared to Targa, a previous common losslessly compressed image format.

WebP came much more recently and tries to be the best of both worlds, with less visible lossy compression and the option to use lossless compression as well, and a whole bunch of other things you can tweak to optimize for your use case. It also more or less replaces GIF as it's fully capable of animation, It's an amazing format that is unfortunately developed and pushed by Google, the harbringers of evil.
